2019년 시작된 코로나 바이러스로 인해 전세계가 이전의 삶과 유리된 일상을 보냈었고 너무나도 당연히 누려왔던 것들이 얼마나 소중한 것인지를 우리 모두가 절감하고 있습니다. 서울국제음악제는 바로 얼마 전 즐겁게 지내던 한 곳의 추억을 끄집어 내고 그 순간을 다시 공유하고자 하였습니다. 
 
교향곡 2번은 코로나로 고통받는 우리 모두를 위해서 작곡되었습니다. 세익스피어가 흑사병으로 격리되었을 때 저술한 소네트를 텍스트 삼고, 어린 조카들이 학교에 가지 못하는 것을 보고 학교의 벨소리를 주제로 삼았습니다. 이날의 주제 “종소리”는 여기서 연유했습니다. 75분 길이의 대작으로 이 음악을 통해 많은 이들이 용기와 기쁨을 가졌으면 합니다. 전세계 최고의 음악인들이 모인 SIMF 오케스트라와 국립합창단, 수원시립합창단, 한국을 빛내고 있는 성악가 임선혜, 이명주, 이아경, 국윤종, 사무엘 윤, 그리고 지휘자 랄프 고토니가 함께합니다.

The spread of COVID-19 caused countless casualties, long-term suffering and sadness around the world by preventing us from living our daily lives. 
In these times, Jeajoon Ryu gave birth to “Symphony No.2”; a piece comprised of four movements. The piece starts with the gloominess of our present situation- suffering through COVID-19, then moves along to other phases such as longing for the liberated times, suggesting a new path for our humanity to walk through, and finally, a sense of hope for the future. 
He used Shakespeare’s sonnets, which the author wrote in isolation caused by the plague. Ryu used the sound of school bells for the theme of the music, which was inspired by watching his nephews not being able to go to school. This grand piece of 75 minutes was composed to bring courage and joy to the audience, who are going through these difficult times. Ryu hopes to share a moment of healing and hoping for the brighter future again through his music. 
As people around the world became isolated from their former life style, we became more aware of the things we took for granted. Not too long ago, this piece attempted to cherish these valuable moments before COVID-19 with the audience through music.
